CANNABIS & CANCER: TREATING YOUR PET WITH CANNABIS
A True Story
We have a Dalmatian cross bitch, she is 11 years old – and absolutely spoiled! She goes everywhere with us, most of the time off the lead as my hubby spent lots of time with her when she was a puppy. Her name is Poppy.
Earlier this year we noticed a swelling on one side of her face and she was obviously in pain. We took her to the vet, thinking it was an abscess. He examined her and said he would remove some of her teeth, and whilst she was under anaesthetic, take a biopsy. Later that day when we collected her, the vet said he had removed 3 teeth and would contact us later with the results of the biopsy.
The phone call was bad news.
The vet confirmed Poppy had a malignant cancer of the jaw which could spread around her mouth. Treatment options were limited:
- Surgery was ruled out as this would involve removing her jaw
- There was the possibility of a medication costing 1000€ per week but there was little likelihood this would prolong her life in her case
- The only feasible solution was prescribed medication to help with the pain and inflammation.
Poppy started this treatment, the swelling reduced and with it the pain. She was her normal happy self again.
Unfortunately after two months the other side of her jaw swelled: the vet confirmed that the cancer had spread and it was only a matter of time before she would die.
We were besides ourselves with grief.
We were convinced we were going to lose our girl: our pride and joy and companion of 11 years. Some friends told us about a local cannabis club which may be able to help us get cannabis oil. The club diluted the pure cannabis oil with a carrier oil (one part cannabis oil to eighty parts hemp seed oil) and capsulated it so that it was easy to medicate Poppy.
That was 2 months ago. Poppy soon began to improve in what seemed like no time at all. She was back to chasing rabbits, although she catches none of them: her energy returned and she is a happy girl again.
Recently we took Poppy for a check up with our vet: he couldn’t believe it:Poppy is in full remission and he is amazed. We can’t believe it either, from expecting to lose her too soon – and now thinking she may outlive us! absolutely amazing.
